Superior VRT4542 is a vent-free firebox enclosure, not a complete burner or wood-burning fireplace. Choose white stacked (WS) or white herringbone (WH) refractory for the exact size; a compatible heater is selected separately.
The selected WS or WH refractory configuration, screens and required hood are supplied. Install the hood and keep screens closed during operation.
Select a separately purchased listed ANSI Z21.11.2 vent-free gas heater that meets this firebox’s dimensional requirements, with no more than 40,000 BTU/hr input. The selected heater determines fuel, ignition, controls and actual input.
Approved outside-air equipment is optional and does not replace the required room-air assessment.

No exhaust chimney or vent pipe is required for the intended vent-free configuration. This does not eliminate the requirement for adequate room combustion and ventilation air. A qualified installer must evaluate room volume, other fuel-burning appliances, tight construction and local restrictions using both the firebox and selected heater manuals. Do not burn wood or add unapproved logs, embers or decorative materials.
The supplied screen and hood must be installed for operation, with the screens closed. The hood is required operating equipment, not an optional decorative upgrade; use only the specified replacement for this size. Keep the log heater inside the screen boundary. The manual specifies at least 42 inches from the opening top to the ceiling and provides separate mantel and side-projection diagrams. Maintain those clearances and keep all required openings clear.
Outside-air equipment is optional and does not replace the room-air assessment. Follow the exact manufacturer framing Figure 8 and heater installation instructions. Do not modify standoffs, notch framing around them, or pack required spaces with insulation. Installation must comply with the manufacturer documentation and applicable codes.
