What Size Electric Fireplace Do I Need?

Electric fireplaces come in widths from about 26 inches to a dramatic 88 inches, and choosing the right size is mostly about the wall, the room, and how you'll use it. Here's a quick framework.

Measure the wall first

For a feature wall, pick a unit roughly one-third to one-half the wall's width. A 60–72 inch linear fireplace suits most 12–16 ft walls; an 88-inch statement piece needs 20+ ft. Leave at least 6–12 inches of breathing room on each side for a balanced look.

Match the size to the room

  • 26–33 inch: bedrooms, offices, dens
  • 34–50 inch: living rooms and great rooms with supplemental heat
  • 50–72 inch: main living areas and open floor plans
  • 72–88 inch: grand rooms, media walls, commercial lobbies

Heat coverage

Most electric fireplaces put out about 5,000 BTUs (1,500W), comfortably heating a 400 sq ft room. Larger rooms or open floor plans benefit from units with higher output or dual heaters.

Viewing style

Decide between single-sided front glass, 3-sided glass for corner or peninsula installs, and deep fireboxes for extra flame realism. Slim models sit nearly flush against the wall; deep models need more recess depth.
